Learn the world in English. The English comes along the way.

Bookworm School is an online school taught in English. One short class a day, with Miss Bookworm, about nature, science, stories and life around the world. Language is what children pick up along the way.

Late morning

We don't just teach English. We teach in English.

When children are educated in English, they gain real knowledge and the ability to explore the English-speaking world. The language itself is the by-product we deliver at the end.

Real subjects, in English

Animals, weather, plants, maps, festivals and stories. Grammar is never a lecture; it comes back again and again inside real content.

Speaking every two minutes

Every word card is one round: Miss Bookworm models it, the child says it, and gets stars and praise right away. No time to drift off, and no fear of getting it wrong.

A class they look forward to

A secret box to guess, a brain break to move, a star of the day. A steady rhythm feels safe; small surprises make tomorrow worth waiting for.

Meet Miss Bookworm

A 30-second cartoon. Miss Bookworm speaks only English; subtitles are available while it plays.

Noon

One class, twenty minutes.

Every class follows the same order. Once children know the rhythm they relax, and all their attention goes to the English and the new ideas.

  1. Hello, and yesterday's hard wordMiss Bookworm greets each child by name and reviews yesterday's hardest word.
  2. The secret boxThree clues in English, four answers to choose from. The answer opens today's topic.
  3. Word cards and speakingFour new words a class: listen, spell, sing, then say a sentence and earn stars.
  4. Brain breakMove to instructions in English, and practise listening at the same time.
  5. A story or something to learnA short story with today's words, or one small fact about the world.
  6. Listen and chooseHear a sentence, pick the right picture, and see straight away what stuck.
  7. Star of the day, and goodbyeLook back at today's words, count the stars, and look forward to tomorrow.

Grades refer to the typical English of native-speaking children in that grade. The higher the level, the more of each week is spent learning subjects in English: from Level 2, every week includes science, social studies and maths topics.

A short test finds the right level.

Ten to fifteen minutes with Miss Bookworm, played like a game. Questions get harder after a right answer and easier after a wrong one. Children who can't read yet can still take it.

  • Listen and choose a picture
  • Repeat a sentence
  • Answer about a picture
  • Read words and a short text

Our story

A girl called Bookworm

When she was four, in her middle year of kindergarten, she stayed home one day with a fever. We put on the English version of Spirited Away. She was spellbound. It was a mysterious world, and she did not care at all whether it spoke English or any other language.

From that day on, English cartoons and English picture books became part of her everyday life. But English is not our first language. We could not give her a real English education, and we could not find expert guidance.

Then we found an online English primary school. From Grade 1 to Grade 6, its teachers taught every subject in near-native English. A few years later the school closed, but by then her English had taken off. By Grade 8, her English had caught up with, and even passed, that of native-speaking children her age.

Her English name in class wasBookworm

Today we want to carry that school's dream forward, and build, for today's children, a school where they learn the world in English. It is named after her.

Learn the world in English. The English comes along the way.

Questions parents ask

What age is it for?

Ages 4 to 15. Classes are by English level, not age. Level 1, open now, is for children who are just starting English.

How long is each class?

One class a day: about 20 minutes at Level 1 and about 30 minutes at higher levels, with no long homework on top.

Is the teacher a real person?

No. Miss Bookworm is an AI teacher. Every class is designed by us and tried out by a primary school teacher before it is published.

Are the classmates real?

Not during the open preview. The classmates, votes and rankings on screen are sample data, so children can get a feel for a big class. Once full classes start, they will be real classmates.

Is my child's voice recorded or uploaded?

No. Speech recognition runs inside your browser. The voice is not saved and is never sent to a server. See our privacy notes.

Do we need an app or an account?

Neither. Open a class in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone, and type your child's English name to join. We recommend the latest Chrome or Safari.
